Heesen Blog: Marielle Baets
Marielle Baets, a talented artist residing in a quaint village near Uden in the Netherlands, has gained recognition for her extraordinary artworks created using the Mosaic technique. With a penchant for combining various materials, Marielle’s creations often take the form of captivating two or three-dimensional pieces.
One of Marielle’s preferred materials for her mosaics is the beautiful combination of glass and porcelain, sourced from repurposed cups, tiles, and other unique finds. Her artistic prowess lies in her ability to infuse these materials with elements from people’s daily lives, allowing her artwork to symbolize cherished memories. From commemorating wedding anniversaries to celebrating the birth of a child or honoring the passing of loved ones, Marielle’s diverse portfolio showcases the depth of emotions embodied within her creations.
For larger projects, Marielle collaborates with her husband, a skilled blacksmith. Together, they are currently working on an awe-inspiring piece called the Heesen tulip, measuring approximately half a meter in size. The tulip will feature metal leaves and stem, elegantly complemented by a mosaic of glass and porcelain for the flower. The intricate craftsmanship involved in this project will demand around 40 hours of meticulous work, carried out solely by Marielle and her husband. The completed Heesen tulip is expected to be unveiled later this summer.
To source the mosaic materials, Marielle relies on a specialized store that offers a wide selection of glass specifically tailored for mosaic art. As for the porcelain pieces, she meticulously hunts for antique coffee cups, tea mugs, vases, and tiles at second-hand shops and flea markets. The challenge lies in finding these treasures adorned with images of old Dutch scenes, such as blue fishing boats and windmillssubtly mixed with the signature color of Heesen – purple.
Marielle’s dedication to her craft extends beyond creating remarkable artworks. She also imparts her knowledge and expertise through classes, and workshops, enabling others to learn and appreciate the art of mosaic. Through her art, Marielle not only immortalizes memories but also fosters a sense of connection and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
Marielle Baets, with her unique mosaic creations and the ongoing Heesen tulip project, continues to leave an indelible mark on the art world. Her ability to intertwine different materials and capture the essence of personal stories in her artworks is truly commendable. As the Heesen tulip nears completion, we eagerly await the unveiling of this magnificent masterpiece, a testament to Marielle’s exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to her craft.
