The Boating Bonanza: Exploring the Palm Beach International Boat Show with Thom Conboy of Heesen USA

Following a successful Dubai International Boat Show, Heesen is now preparing to attend the Palm Beach International Boat Show, where we will display Santosha, the first in the new 57m aluminium class. She will be berthed alongside a further two Heesen yachts: the 2022 Book Ends, a 50m semi-displacement vessel, and the 2021 ELA, a 50m FDHF. Thom Conboy, our US-agent based in Fort Lauderdale, shares valuable tips and tricks for planning your visit to the show and how to make the most out of this exciting event.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show is a highlight in the boating calendar and is an event that showcases the luxury and passion of the industry. Taking place from March 19-23, 2025, this annual event is a must-visit for both seasoned enthusiasts and those newly embracing the world of boats. Attendees can expect an impressive array of attractions, ranging from stunning new construction vessels and meticulously maintained brokerage boats to the latest innovations in maritime technology.

Since 1982, the show has been a pillar of the boating and marine industry, serving as a crucial economic engine for the Palm Beach community and the surrounding tri-county area. An analysis of the 2022 event revealed an estimated state-wide economic impact of over $1.05 billion, with more than 55,000 visitors contributing to total sales of around $725 million. Owned by the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County and produced by Informa Markets, the Palm Beach International Boat Show will take place along Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach, directly across the Intracoastal Waterway from Palm Beach Island.

This year’s show promises to be unforgettable. It will feature over $1.2 billion worth of yachts and accessories, including hundreds of boats ranging from 8-foot inflatables to superyachts that reach nearly 300 feet in length. With over 800 boats on display, there will be something for everyone here, from those looking for the VIP treatment to adventure-seekers looking to experience the dynamic AquaZone.

In an exciting twist, this year’s event coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary (PBM+C) Art Fair, which is part of Informa Markets’ Art Miami division. Windward Club ticketholders will have access to both events, enjoying amenities such as a complimentary open bar, gourmet food, and concierge services in a unique indoor and outdoor lounge setting. The Palm Beach County Convention Center will host an array of globally renowned art galleries alongside marine enthusiasts, creating the perfect fusion of fine art and luxury vessels.

For the first time in its history, the Palm Beach International Boat Show will run for five days, highlighting the increasing demand and interest around the event. This extended schedule allows for greater flexibility, both for exhibitors and attendees, particularly in inclement weather, and is expected to benefit local businesses. The extra day is a welcome addition, aligning the Palm Beach show with other notable annual shows in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Although West Palm Beach attracts fewer visitors than other Floridian boat shows, it excels in generating sales, demonstrating that serious buyers flock to this premier event. Positioned just across the Intracoastal Waterway, the Palm Beach Marina plays a key role in accommodating boaters during the event. The marina, which underwent a $40 million renovation and reopened in November 2021, offers upgraded amenities, including expanded shore power, concrete floating docks, advanced security systems, and wider slips capable of accommodating vessels up to 295 feet.

“Planning is crucial to making the most of your visit to the Palm Beach Boat Show. The best days to attend are typically Wednesday through Friday when the crowds are more manageable, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Arriving early, particularly between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., allows for a quieter experience, giving visitors ample time to explore the exhibits. As the afternoon progresses, many attendees head to nearby dining spots, providing a delightful way to unwind after a day of exploration.” – Thom Conboy.

Designed to welcome families, the show offers a range of activities for visitors of all ages. However, it is important to teach children basic yacht etiquette in order to prevent accidental damage to the yachts on display. This will also allow families to bond over shared experiences while instilling respect for both the boats and the work of the exhibitors. Although it may be tempting to bring pets, it is generally advisable to leave them at home to avoid unnecessary stress.

“The Palm Beach Boat Show is an excellent opportunity for clients to visit yachts in a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. This is a very American show, and the fact that it is located in the so-called ‘Wall Street of the South’ makes it easy for affluent clients to walk the docks, feeling at home and safe. The show is in their backyard, so to speak!”
